Fentanyl and Risks to First Responders

Course Description:

This course aims to raise awareness on the emerging issue of fentanyl abuse as well as fentanyl and a trafficable drug and the clandestine manufacture or extraction of fentanyl from pharmaceutical products.

Focus is given to developing an understanding of the nature, use, abuse and toxicity of fentanyl and its analogues, exposure pathways such as inhalation and dermal absorption through which both secondary exposure and overdose can occur. Participants will examine several case studies where exposure has occurred to first responders and discuss strategies to mitigate potential exposure as well as decontamination procedures.

Learning Outcomes:

Increased awareness of the risks posed by fentanyl and fentanyl analogues to first responders, understanding of safe handing procedures to minimise exposure, ability to recognise exposure symptoms and how to treat exposed Officers and decontamination principals.
